What is a cataract?

A cataract is a gradual clouding of the eye’s naturally clear lens, similar to looking through a window that has slowly frosted over. Most cataracts develop with age, and by mid 60’s, more than half of Americans have one. The good news is that it is the most common and most predictable surgery performed in the United States today.

The lens sits just behind your iris and focuses light onto the retina. Over time, proteins in the lens clump together, scattering light and dulling color. The cloudiness rarely forms directly in the center at first, which is why early cataracts can be easy to miss.

Common Symptoms

Painless, blurry vision
Gradual haze — like a smudged lens you can't wipe away.
Glare & halos at night
Oncoming headlights or streetlights feel unusually harsh.
Light sensitivity
Bright sun or indoor lighting causes discomfort you didn't have before.
Double vision in one eye
Ghosting or shadowing that persists even with glasses.
Needing brighter light to read
Small print keeps migrating closer to a lamp or window.
Fading or yellowing colors
Whites look beige; blues lose their punch.

The easiest decision you’ll ever make.

Meet with one of our surgeons for a thorough evaluation. We’ll tell you honestly whether surgery is right for you — and if so, which lens is best for your life.

FAQ’s

Will I need glasses after cataract surgery?2026-04-27T02:51:55+00:00

That depends on the type of IOL you choose. If your IOL gives good vision far away, you may need reading glasses to see close up. If your IOL gives good close vision, you may need glasses to see at a distance. Patients with astigmatism may need glasses if they don’t get an IOL that corrects it.

Your vision after cataract surgery depends on:

  • Whether you have other eye conditions that affect your vision
  • What type of intraocular lens you chose
  • How quickly your eyes heal
  • After cataract surgery, many people see better almost immediately
How is cataract surgery done?2026-05-14T23:13:47+00:00

Cataract surgery is done at an out patient surgery center. You go home the same day. Your will be given numbing drops and a light sedative to keep you relaxed and comfortable. A cataract is removed through a tiny incision at the side of your eye. An artificial lens (called an “intraocular lens” or IOL) is placed in your eye.

What is a cataract?2026-04-27T02:46:55+00:00

A cataract is a clouding, or haziness of the lens of the eye. The lens helps focus light on the retina, the area at the back of the eye where images are formed. When the lens becomes cloudy, these images are less clear.
