Glaucoma is often called the “silent thief of sight” because it is painless, gradual, and dangerous if left untreated. Our specialists combine careful monitoring, medical therapy, laser treatment, and modern surgical options to stop it early and help preserve your vision.
What is glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a group of diseases that damage the optic nerve, the cable that carries images from your eye to your brain. It is usually, but not always, caused by pressure inside the eye that is too high for the nerve to tolerate. Left unchecked, it quietly erodes peripheral vision first, then central vision, until the loss becomes permanent.
The most common form, primary open angle glaucoma, develops so slowly that most patients feel fine for years. That is exactly what makes routine eye exams matter. By the time vision changes are noticeable, a portion of the optic nerve is already gone and cannot be restored. The good news is that with early detection and consistent treatment, the vast majority of patients keep their sight for life.
